In the face of the lingering strike by ASUU, Presidential aspirant Professor Chris Imumolen has rolled out over 20 million scholarships to Nigerian Students, both undergraduate and postgraduate.
The Accord party aspirant who owns universities abroad is an academia and philanthropist, known for his unflinching support to Nigerian Youths through scholarships and job creation.
Imumolen speaking during a press briefing in Abuja Wednesday, stated that education will be free of charge for Nigerians from primary to tertiary institutions when he emerges President. This, he said, is because he knows the importance of education to nation-building.
According to him, the digital study scholarship program which costs about 20,000 Dollars will allow for over 20million beneficiaries from Nigerian universities to transfer their current programs, study from home with online classes and acquire international certifications as the scholarship is in linkage with international institutions.
He said, “We all know that it is no longer news that our children, our brothers and our sisters are at home due to the fact that ASUU and the federal government have a very big disagreement and this has impacted the academic section of the Nigerian students.
“I am not one of those presidential aspirants who only would keep promises I would act before I get to become the president. So the very first thing we are doing today is to open an opportunity for Nigerian students to have access to international study program online via our collaboration with international universities in California, Togo and Ghana, where students can sit in the comfort of their home and have their degrees and other certifications.
“These would go a long way to end the impact of the ASUU strike on Nigeria and Nigerian students. We are doing this because we understand the importance of education to nation-building. Like I would always say and I’ll continue to see that a lasting solution to the lingering ASUU strike is to begin to have leaders who understand the value of education. I’m a professional, and have detailedly and deeply engaged in the educational sector and other sectors.
“I understand that value and that is why I’m doing this to ensure that millions over 10 to 20 Millions Nigerians at home can gain access to free hundred percent scholarship. I don’t know but I don’t think this has been done in the history of this country where a person or party ideology will come up to give Nigerians scholarships. That again is to show that the problem with the Nigerian educational sector and every other sector is not rocket science, it can be fixed when you have people who can sacrifice, who want to do it, or who have the capacity to do it.”
“As a matter of fact, from the primary to tertiary level, Education will be free for Nigerian people. It’s possible, we can do it. It’s not rocket science. They’re not doing it does not mean that we cannot do it. We are doing it now with our private funds. Imagine what will happen when we have the opportunity to manage your funds. It means that it will be judiciously used.”
He further said that Nigeria as an underdeveloped nation needs education at a subsidised rate, hence he has awarded over 500,000 scholarships in the past, in several fields.
“We have before now in the past 15 years given over 500,000 scholarships in various study fields. Most of our universities all over the world run on scholarship basis. That is because we understand the impact of education to 3rd world nations.
“Nigeria is one of the underdeveloped countries in the world. That means education should still be subsidized. When I become the president of Nigeria, education would become one of our powers, ” he added.
